Fast as You Lyrics by Dwight Yoakam

Dwight Yoakam Lyrics

Maybe someday I'll be strong.
Maybe it won't be long.
I'll be the one who's tough.
You'll be the one who's got it rough,
It won't be long and maybe I'll be real strong.

Maybe I'll do things right.
Maybe I'll start tonight.
You'll learn to cry like me.
Baby, let's just wait and see.
Maybe I'll start tonight and do things right.

You'll control me,
Oh so boldly.
Rule me 'til I'm free.
'Til the pain that shakes me,
Finally makes me,
Get up off of my knees.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Maybe I'll be fast as you.
Maybe I'll break hearts too.
But, I think that you'll slow down.
When your turn to hurt comes around.
Maybe I'll break hearts and be as fast as you.

Uh.

Ahh.....

Maybe I'll break hearts and be as fast as you.

Ah, So good.

Yeah, maybe I'll be fast as you.
Maybe I'll break hearts too.

Annotations and Meaning:

"Fast as You" by Dwight Yoakam plumbs notions of emotional grit, maybe competition within relationship scenarios, but definitely an appeal to one-up the powerful forces dealing from one's own heartbreak. The narrator of the song speaks very directly to an ex-lover, thus delivering both vulnerability and a kind of defiant ambition.
The opening lines, "Maybe someday I'll be strong, maybe it won't be long. I'll be the one who's tough, you'll be the one who's got it rough," were pretty well the setting up of a situation of inversion, whereby it would seem the narrator wanted to turn the tables on being vulnerable to emotionally strong. This is a common course in many emotional relationships, whereby power dynamics can change hands with time.
And maybe most telling from the chorus: "Maybe I'll be fast as you. Maybe I'll break hearts too. But, I think that you'll slow down. When your turn to hurt comes around.". It portrays that the narrator deems the relationship as some kind of race or competition in emotional endurance, detachment.

The use of "fast" metaphorically speaks to how fast someone can just jump from one relationship to the next, most times leaving a lot of emotional turmoil in their wake.

Towards that, an undercurrent of a longing for the emotional freedom seems to run throughout the song and comes to expression in the lines: "You'll control me, Oh so boldly. Rule me 'til I'm free. 'Til the pain that shakes me. Finally makes me, Get up off of my knees." These lyrics bring out in a very strong way the individual's desire to finally break free from the emotional hold that another person has over the man. He repeats the vow "to be as fast as you" at one go; it is not only the challenge but also a personal goal. It is an expression for the wish to have, in either case, his partner's strength at the level of feeling or the same level of indifference. This tells of a walkway to self-empowerment but also tells of long-lasting bitterness towards how the relationship matured.
